GREYHOUND Goes Richter

Cohen Thomas Talks His New Banger Clip "GREYHOUND"

CW: This is probably a tough one, but what’s your favorite wave from the clip?

CT: Hmmm, very tricky one. It would be very close between the last clip at Shipsterns or the sunset pole cam GoPro clip.

Both felt like special moments. The wave at Shippies was on a really slow day. I think I had been surfing for over three hours and was barely catching a breaking wave, just hoping for a set. By the time this one came through, the tide was so high.

I was sitting out there with one other bloke who hadn’t surfed it before, and during our conversation we drifted off the spot. The wave looked small when it came in, but I think its size was hidden by the tide. I don’t think I’ve ever dropped so much off the step in my life — and I’m very surprised I even caught my board again and got rail.

I thought I was coming out and made it so far, but it clamped at the end and cut me short. I think thats my favourite wave as it was my most exciting rush from filming the clip.

CW: How much time did you put in to chasing swells to shoot for this edit? months or years?

CT: This edit was filmed mainly over the first half of 2024 (hence the long hair for most of the clip). The last wave and some of the waves from WA were filmed in mid-2025. The project was supposed to be released a while ago, but we aimed to put it out around the time of my board release.

And yeah haha, I spent a lot of time chasing that clip. There were some mega skunkings, but also some of the best trips of my life.

CW: How were the vibes when this masterpiece was playing at the premiere?

CT: The premiere was wild to say the least.... We dropped my brothers clip "Cursed" and Harley wards clip too. We havent had a boog prem in Tasmania in over 10 years.... Everyone I had grown up surfing with was there and more. Two tasssie punk bands played afterwards "Haro" and "Powderkeg" and "What So Not" blew the place up after that. It was the best night I have ever had in Hobart for sure and we have set the bar extremley high for the next one....

CW: For those who don’t know, What’s it look or feel like inside one of those massive Shipsterns pits?

CT: Hahaha, it’s such a roller coaster of events and emotions. The anticipation and excitement of seeing a swell. Walking in there in the dark. Waiting out the back and knowing you’re up next. A lot goes into that two-second moment haha.

It’s a massive rush! The best I’ve discovered yet. But quite often the memory of the wave is fuzzy, or you just have one good frame you can picture.
